Did I take it too far? With the title? I wasn’t sure but I decided to stick with it because it does make me chuckle. Jordan got me some goodies from Third Love for our anniversary and in the box, there was a $30 off coupon for Hello Fresh. I so naively thought that was equivalent to a three-meal order so I went for it, but it really still cost me $30 after the coupon. Oh well! We Hello Freshed for a week, and I thought I’d share my thoughts on this still, somewhat bizarre concept.
What + How Much
I was really surprised by how many meal options Hello Fresh offers, but also really impressed with the different combinations you can choose from – 2 people or 4 people, veggie or classic, family plan, etc. We decided to go with the classic plan (aka, not veggie) for 3 meals. At $9.99 per serving, this selection would normally cost $59.94. With our $30 coupon and free shipping, our total came to $29.94 for three complete meals.
Once you pick your plan, you get to choose from the menu they are offering that week. It was a tough choice but Jordan and I managed to agree on all three meals. We selected country gravy pork chops with a potato and collard green hash, penne pasta with chicken sausage and kale, and Carolina barbecue chicken with mac n’ cheese and green beans.
When they say everything you need is in the box, they really mean it. Honestly, I had a hard time believing this but we didn’t step into the pantry once while cooking these meals.
What We Didn’t Love
Meat is something that I obsess over. I’m so paranoid about bad meat so letting someone else pick my meat and then send it to me via UPS is less than desirable. There was nothing wrong with the meat they sent us, but I would prefer to purchase my own.
Thank goodness for great coupons, because I would have a major issue with the price without $30 off. I’m pretty sure that I spend too much on groceries each week, so for me to be alarmed at the price says a lot. However, I have to remind myself that time and shipping are both factored into the price. Hello Fresh always offers free shipping, but you know that’s included in the price. Time is my greatest asset, and this really did save a lot of time in meal planning, meal prep and the meals don’t take a lot of time to prepare.
My absolute least favorite thing about Hello Fresh is the waste. I’ve recently become very passionate about recycling and more importantly, reducing waste. I about cried when I realized how many materials are used to produce one Hello Fresh box. Of course, you have the box, and then there is insulation, two large freezer packs, three large paper backs and a million individually packaged ingredients. A lot of the materials are recyclable, but it is still better for the environment to purchase ingredients in bulk or regular package sizes.
What We Did Love
Did you read collard greens in our menu up there? I would never order collard greens at a restaurant, let alone purchase them at a grocery store. Hello Fresh is a great way to try new ingredients, and it turns out I quite enjoy collard greens. We’ll see if I’m brave enough to try them on my own someday.
Jordan actually prepared two of the meals completely on his own. It didn’t surprise me that the individually packaged ingredients were intriguing to him, so I asked him if we wanted to take a shot at the second meal. Not only did he love making it, he did a great job. It only made sense for him to make the last meal as well. Hello Fresh writes a very easy to follow recipe card for each meal and I think it’s a great way for the husband to log some hours in the kitchen.
Perhaps the most important element of this system is how good the meals really are. Good news – they are delicious. We really, really enjoyed all three of them. My least favorite meal was the penne with chicken sausage and kale because, as much as I love tomatoes, I’m not a huge fan of warm/hot/cooked tomatoes. I’ll be adding the other two recipes into our collection.
Will We Do Hello Fresh Again?
If the right opportunity presented itself, of course we would! However, we will not be making Hello Fresh a standard in our life. Hello Fresh is simply not cost effective, and I do prefer to eat lighter during the week. I can see myself purchasing Hello Fresh if I’m going to be out of town because it would be great for Jordan to make dinner while I’m away (and take leftovers for lunch). Hello Fresh is also something that Jordan would enjoy receiving as a gift. I wouldn’t, but he loves subscriptions and Hello Fresh has that feel to it.
If you’re thinking about trying Hello Fresh, send me an email and I will send you information on how to receive a free box. I only have four, so don’t hesitate!
